The Daring History of Denim

Bold, blue, and boundlessly cool, denim has long been a fabric with unmistakable swagger. Read on to learn about the story of denim and how it got from blue-collar workwear to designer jeans for men.

When was denim created?

Denim was actually first made by accident in late 17th century France, when weavers created the fabric while trying to produce serge, a different kind of sturdy cotton fabric. This fortuitous mistake was a stroke of luck that would go on to revolutionize the fashion industry.

Why was denim so popular?

Starting in the mid-19th century onwards, denim was mostly worn as work clothes by miners, farmers, mechanics, and cowboys. Prized for its durability, denim was a true-blue, trustworthy fabric for blue-collar men. But by the 1950s, denim picked up a whole new swag factor. Heavy-hitting Hollywood greats of the day like John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and James Dean rocked denim in their starring roles, transforming it into a hot commodity. Teens began wearing jeans as a statement of rebellion, and as a result, the provocative pants were banned from schools, restaurants, and theaters.

In the 1960s, denim was adopted by the counterculture. Beatniks and hippies wore jeans loud and proud in solidarity with the working class. Meanwhile, feminists and women’s liberation campaigners chose jeans to show the boy’s club that they too could wear the pants.

By the time the 1980s struck, denim had become standard uniform for devotees of rock, grunge, and punk. Acid-washed and splattered jeans like our Dirty Indigo Splatter Skinny Jean were all the vogue, and distressed jeans like the Faded Grey Distress Skinny Jean were undeniably cool. In the '90s, denim went luxury, and the rest is history.
